WHO ARE WE?
Lulworth
& Winfrith Sub-Aqua Club is a BS-AC branch, based at
Lulworth Cove in Dorset. Originally formed in 1963 as a Special Branch at UKAEA Winfrith, membership was opened to all several years ago, and now, we have about 60 members from all walks of life, of all age groups. We organise an active and varied dive programme on local wrecks and rocky reefs, with up to 3 dives per week scheduled during the Summer. Several Club trips are organised each year to dive in other parts of Britain and overseas.
TRAINING
To attract new members, we organise several "Come-and-try-it" sessions during the autumn. Classroom and pool training using the BS-AC syllabus starts in
January and continues until March, when we start our diving in the sea. During their first year, trainees should qualify as a BS-AC
Ocean and/or Sports Diver. After this, progressive training is available through Dive Leader up to Advanced Diver Level. Specialist training modules are run, such as oxygen administration, boat handling, diver rescue, and marine radio. The Club has an excellent safety record and is continually reviewing diving and boat handling practices so that the techniques and skills of Club members are maintained.
EQUIPMENT
The Club owns
a rigid-hulled inflatable boat (RIB), a 7m BWM (Fast Reactor),
which can carry 10 divers. The boat is equipped with GPS (satellite) navigation,
echo sounder, and marine radio. We also carry full safety equipment including
oxygen resuscitation equipment, flares, etc. This boat was purchased in 1996
with assistance from the National Lottery. We also own a number of sets of
diving equipment, which can be hired by trainees during their first year of
diving.
